My dear friend Ann Elizabeth Grace has just written a book! (Of course when I say “just” I mean that it is *just* finished, but has taken tons of effort and time to write.) It is an amazing book about the trials and tribulations of growing up as a Gen Y-er, the generation after Gen X. It has great anecdotes from twenty-somethings as well as a lot of good advice about how to cope with the stress of uncertainty and the sometimes overwhelming options of being a young adult in the 2000s. Even if you are already out of your 20s, this book is great because finding focus in your life happens at different times for everyone. Besides, who couldn’t use a little more focus? Anyway, this book is great and is for sale on Amazon and Wheatmark. Buy it!

Jack Hanley Show- Bjorn Copeland

I have found the press release for the Jack Hanley show, which was no where in sight at the opening. While the artist may still be a stoner, I’m not sure, I think I understand the work a bit more. Here is a section of the PR:

The sculptures and works on paper included in the exhibit are the products of accumulated, found detritus and debris, collected over the last few years along the artist’s route to his studio. By surrounding himself with large amounts of stimuli (trash), Copeland creates a studio environment for filtering and soaking up information. Decisions that were made by the original designer of the, now discarded, products or product packaging that he collects, become the starting point for Copeland’s assemblages and collages. These works, in turn, begin to inform and dictate the outcome of the next pieces he produces. With one idea based on the last, an alternate version of the environment that the work was drawn from is presented.

Karin Mamma Andersson’s paintings of interiors and landscapes merge the mysterious with the mundane. They evoke her native northern Swedish countryside, where the sun never sets in midsummer nor rises in midwinter.

Andersson is a leading contributor to the resurgence in painting as a contemporary art form. Thought of as a ‘painter’s painter’, she has a sensuous approach to colour, surface and style. Some areas of the canvas are left blank, giving her work a mysterious quality.

Andersson refers to Swedish painters such as Ernst Josephson and Dick Bengtsson and like Peter Doig and Laura Owens displays different painting techniques.

Ok, so I just heard about this painter and now I’m totally smitten with her work. Her art name is Mamma Anderson. She does paintings of a range of spaces, interiors and places.
